Every Marvel fan knows that you can always expect a post-credits scene in a Marvel Studios movie, and the post-credits scene for “Homecoming” set up a potential villain, or villains, for the sequel.

Before the final battle with the Vulture, Adrian Toomes discovers that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, and when their final battle is finished, Peter saves Toomes from dying, and makes sure that he gets picked up by the authorities.

Toomes is then sent to jail where he encounters Mac Gargan who is also in jail. Gargan approaches Adrian Toomes and tells him that he heard a rumor that Toomes knows the true identity of Spider-Man, and he has some friends on the outside who want to go after Spidey.

Adrian Toomes refrains from giving up Peter’s secret identity and tells Gargan that if he knew then Spider-Man would already be dead.

Director Jon Watts recently spoke to EW about the post-credits scene, and he says that it was Adrian’s way of thanking Peter for saving his life.

“That’s what is cool — he gets a moment of redemption and he gets to protect Peter, even though Peter would never know,” says director Jon Watts. “It’s his way of saying thank you.”

Watts also said that, “Toomes definitely could come back.”

Mac Gargan didn’t become Scorpion in “Homecoming” but it will be interesting to see where they go with the character, and if he possibly ends up forming an alliance with Adrian Toomes and/or some other sinister villains in the sequel.

“Homecoming” also includes another post-credits scene which features Captain America sharing some advice about patience at the very end. If you’ve seen if then you know that the scene requires no explanation.
