“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is set to hit theaters next month, and it was recently announced that James Gunn will be returning to direct the third film in the series. The Guardians of the Galaxy films have introduced the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and soon we’ll see the cosmic side collide with Earth in “Avengers: Infinity War.”

“Infinity War” will wrap up over a decade of Marvel stories, and after it’s all said and done the MCU will need to build toward another big event. James Gunn recently took to Facebook to talk about what’s to come, and he noted that the third Guardians of the Galaxy film will set up stories for the next 10 years and beyond.

“Much of what’s happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengers’ Infinity War. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far.”

When the Marvel Cinematic Universe first launched, it was focused on Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, but so much has changed since then. Marvel has been able to bring quite a few characters into the public eye, so it should be interesting to see which characters become big players in the MCU over the next few years.
