“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is smashing records left and right and it just destroyed another one. Disney issued a press release on Wednesday confirmed that “Star Wars” had earned enough money to outgross the $760 million dollar record set by “Avatar” to become the highest grossing domestic movie of all time.
However “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” still has a long way to go before it becomes the highest grossing film worldwide. “Avatar” current sits comfortably in the top spot with a gross of $2.788 billion worldwide. “Star Wars” has grossed $1.6 billion worldwide. But keep in mind, it took “Avatar” months to reach a gross of $2.788 billion and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has grossed $1.6 billion in only a matter of weeks.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” still has yet to open in China where the film will be released on January 9th. China is a huge market so expect that number for worldwide gross to get a nice boost over the next week few weeks.
