R-rated comic book movies are all the rage right now. “Deadpool” has been making big money at the box office and now everyone’s talking about taking the R-rated route. Fox isn’t being shy about the fact that they’re pushing for “Wolverine 3” to be rated-R and they seem to be open to the idea of a possible X-Force movie getting the same rating. Even “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is getting an R-rated cut on Blu-Ray. So will Disney and Marvel Studios be looking to get in on the R-rated action anytime soon?
The answer is no. During an investors call on Wednesday Disney Chairman Bob Iger had the following to say about the subject: “We don’t have any plans to make R-rated Marvel movies.”
Sorry Marvel fans, it looks like you’re going to have to tune into the Netflix shows if you want your fix of R-rated content under the Marvel Studios banner. Sure, the rating worked for “Deadpool.” But that’s because it fits the tone of the character and that’s the point that Hollywood seems to be missing.
Marvel shows like “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” would surely be rated-R if they were movies, but if you think about it, even with an R-rating they would still be quite different from “Deadpool.” You can’t just slap an R-rating on a movie that doesn’t need it. The tone of the film needs to be a tone that fits the characters. When you get the tone wrong, you run the risk of putting out a film similar to that “Fantastic Four” reboot Fox released last year. And nobody wants that. Nobody.
