‘Civil War’ Screenwriters Talk Original Plans For ‘Captain America 3’ And More

With all the hype behind “Captain America: Civil War” it’s weird to think that there was time when the threequel wasn’t “Civil War.” Screen Crush recently caught up with “Civil War” screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and they opened up about their original plans for the film.

“We started out working on a Captain America 3 and what would that be, picking up the thread that had been left behind by Winter Soldier. So it was Bucky, it was Steve and the ramifications of digging deeper into that relationship.” Markus said.

The change in direction came rather abruptly as according to Markus, Kevin Feige walked into their office, said the words: “Civil War,” and that was that. Although “Civil War” wasn’t part of the plan at first, a lot of what McFeely and Markus worked on for the original script still made it inot the movie. The film is set to feature many characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the Cap/Bucky relationship will also be a major plot thread in the film.

“A lot of that movie is still in this movie. The central theme, even the way [Daniel Bruhl’s character] Zemo is operating, are from that iteration.” McFeely added.

“Captain America: Civil War” opens in theaters on May 6, 2016.

Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability when the actions of the Avengers lead to collateral damage. The new status quo deeply divides members of the team. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) sharply disagrees and supports oversight. As the debate escalates into an all-out feud, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) must pick a side.
