The upcoming Power Rangers reboot is set to hit theaters in March, and Bryan Cranston will be playing Zordon in the feature film. Bryan Cranston is no stranger to Power Rangers, as he voiced a few characters on the television series back in the day. But Bryan Cranston’s career has come a long way since then.
Cranston recently spoke to IGN and he told them that when was first asked about possibly playing Zordon he thought back to his time on the Power Rangers TV show, and he was a little apprehensive, but he decided to give the script a chance.
“I thought, ‘Power Rangers? It’s kind of the [1960s] Batman television show – Pow! Zing! Whap!’ And I had a phone call with the director and he said, ‘Think of it this way… Like Batman came from TV and became a completely different animal in the movies, so too is it here. We’re going to take this and revamp it and it’s going to be grounded and real.’ And I thought ‘Okay, with that, let me read it.’”
Zordon is a vital part of the Power Rangers mythology, as he’s the mentor who leads the Power Rangers in their battle to protect planet Earth. Zordon’s role will stay the same in the reboot film, but according to Bryan Cranston, frustation will begin to set in for Zordon when the team doesn’t advance as fast as he hopes they would.
“He is a frustrated mentor of these kids. They’re not advancing as I’d hoped. Some of them are not taking this seriously, the responsibility that has been placed upon them or that they have been chosen for. And yet, you’re a mentor. It’s almost like being a coach. You want to break down the individuality of them so that they can grow as a team.”
“Power Rangers” hits theaters on March 24.
