No surprises here, but “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” absolutely crushed it at the box office this weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Rogue One” raked in $155 million at the domestic box office, and $135.5 million internationally for a total of $290.5 million at the worldwide box office.
The film has yet to open in China or South Korea, but the movie debuted at number 1 in every country where it was released.
Now that Disney owns the rights to the Star Wars franchise they pretty much have a license to print money anytime they like, and luckily for them they have another hit on their hands with “Rogue One.” The film had a massive opening weekend at the box office, and it’s also getting positive reviews from fans and critics alike.
“Rogue One” follows in the footsteps of “The Force Awakens” which also had a massive December opening. “Star Wars: Episode VIII” is set to hit theaters next December, and it sounds like fans have a lot to look forward to in regards to upcoming Star Wars standalone films.
“This is a massive opening and the second-best by a wide margin. And it sets us up in a perfect way for the lucrative holiday period ahead,” Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis said. “It is a litmus test for what these stand-alone movies can be, both from a story perspective and a commercial perspective.”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is in theaters now.
