Ever since Game of Thrones first premiered on HBO fans have been concerned that the show will outpace the books due to George R.R. Martin’s notoriously slow writing style. Showrunner David Benioff recently confirmed this while he was speaking a Oxford Union. Not only will the show end before the books but it’s also been confirmed that both mediums will have the same ending.
“Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. I kind of wish that there were some things we didn’t have to spoil, but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on…and that’s what we’re going to do.” Benioff said.
It should be interesting to see how this plays out and see exactly how the two mediums differentiate from one another. Either way it’s an exciting time to be a fan of the series and the books.
Game of Thrones Season 5 will premiere April 12 on HBO.
