“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” wrapped up season three last month and before it was all said and done we learned that Phil Coulson was no longer the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson is now once again a field agent and according to Clark Gregg, that’s the type of work that Coulson is most happy doing. Gregg recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what’s next for Coulson and he also gave his thoughts on how this whole new director thing is going to work out.
“I don’t know that it’s been determined. I thought I was going to find out when I saw Civil War, but it’s not at all clear. It all depends when the glorious Nick Fury [Samuel L. Jackson] returns from the cold and the shadows. I suspect, in the wake of the Sokovia Accords and the end of Civil War, the people involved in choosing who the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be are other than in-house S.H.I.E.L.D. people. If I know my government bureaucracies, I have a feeling it will be someone somewhat less qualified than Coulson to run S.H.I.E.L.D.”
Although Clark Gregg claims he doesn’t know for sure who the new director will be, he did note that he feels Agent May would be a good choice for the job.
“I’d love it if it was [her],” Gregg says. “That would be magnificent. She has earned that right and she is a commander that Coulson would absolutely follow with absolute loyalty.”
“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will return for season 4 in the fall.
