“Justice League” was released last week to mixed reviews after months of anticipation and hype. Although there was hype behind the film, there was also controversy as director Zack Snyder had to step down earlier this year due to a personal tragedy, and Joss Whedon stepped in to finish the film.

The opening scene of the film features Batman using a criminal as bait as he tries to find a parademon, and actor Holt McCallany played the criminal featured in the scene. During a recent interview with Men’s Fitness, Holt confirmed that the opening scene was filmed by Joss Whedon, and he also revealed that it was supposed to be more comedic.

“My scene with Batman was originally conceived as a comedic scene. That’s how Joss wrote it, and that’s how we shot it. I thought it came out great, but the studio felt it would be a mistake to open the film with a completely comedic scene, so it was re-edited a little bit.”

The scene definitely featured more of a serious tone, and Holt noted that he was disappointed to see that it was changed, but he later received a nice gift from Joss Whedon.

“I was disappointed, but when I got home to New York I found a bottle of my favorite Champagne and a note from Joss that said ‘To Battles Lost. Gratefully, Joss.’ I can’t tell you how much it meant to me that he took the time to write to me. Joss Whedon is a class act. I had the letter framed.”

“Justice League” is in theaters now.

“Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists newfound ally Diana Prince to face an even greater threat. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to recruit a team to stand against this newly awakened enemy. Despite the formation of an unprecedented league of heroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash — it may be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”
