It’s been almost two years since the Star Wars franchise successfully returned to theaters, and Disney has big plans for expanding the franchise. So far we’ve seen one spinoff with “Rogue One” and the second spinoff based on Han Solo is set to hit theaters next year. It’s been rumored that Disney and Lucasfilm have plans for other spinoffs, and now it’s been confirmed that another trilogy is in the works.

It was announced today that “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson will create a new trilogy, and he’s set to write and direct the first film with Ram Bergman attached as a producer.

According to the official announcement, Rian Johnson will create a trilogy that focuses on new characters hailing from a different corner of the galaxy, and it will be completely separate from the Skywalker saga.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

As of this writing, no release dates have been set for the films in the new trilogy, but this is certainly exciting news for fans of the Star Wars franchise.
