Sony Exec Says Spider-Man Spin-Off Movie News Is Coming Soon

Marvel and Sony broke the internet when they announced last year that they had agreed to a deal to share Spider-Man. So far things have been working out very well as Spider-Man made his MCU debut to rave reviews in “Captain America: Civil War” and he’s set to star in his own standalone film next summer.

Before the deal was made to share Spider-Man, there were a lot of rumors going around in regards to Spider-Man spin-off movies. Sony had plans to make a Sinister Six film, a Venom film, and there were also rumors of a female fronted film set in the Spider-Man universe. Neither Sony or Marvel have said much about any potential spin-offs since the deal was announced, but it looks like we’ll be hearing something hopefully sooner rather than later.

“We’re working on lots of that stuff, and there’s a concerted effort now,” Tom Rothman, the Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group told Collider. “I think there will be real news as opposed to speculative news before too long.”

Rothman also praised Sony’s relationship with Marvel.

“It’s been fabulous, and we’re really excited about it. We wrapped filming on the new Spider-Man about a week ago, there’s a little pick up shooting being done now, but pretty much done. It’s great, it’s been great. Kevin Feige and I have known each other for a long time. I have tremendous respect for him and the entire Marvel organization, so, it’s been a first rate collaboration.”

Although Rothman praised Sony’s relationship with Marvel, it’s not clear as to whether or not any Spider-Man spin-off movies will be integrated into the MCU.

It’s worth noting that back in March The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that Sony had tapped Dante Harper to write a script for a Venom film. It was noted in the report that the idea for the film was not only to have it stand on its own, but to also use it to launch a franchise.
