When Star Wars returned to theaters in 2015 with “The Force Awakens” Luke Skywalker was a big part of the plot, but he didn’t get much screen time, and when fans finally did catch a glimpse of old Luke Skywalker, he didn’t say a word.

The Luke Skywalker we’re going to see in “The Last Jedi” is clearly not the same Luke that we last saw in “Return of the Jedi” and Mark Hamill says that certain aspects of his performance were influenced by an old friend. During an interview with Yahoo Movies, Hamill noted that he channeled Alec Guinness for “The Last Jedi.”

“I was completely in awe of this man. But in terms of studying him for this film, I channelled his dignity and his composure. But Obi-Wan has a much different back story than Luke, so although there are many similarities, you know, you have to really sort of take ownership of your own character.”

Judging from the footage that’s been released so far, Luke appears to be quite jaded, so it should be interesting to see a new spin on an iconic character, with a few classic Alec Guinness inspired qualities mixed in.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens everywhere on December 17, 2017.
