A few years ago Fox announced that they were moving forward with a Gambit film starring Channing Tatum, but production for the movie has yet to get off the ground. With all the chaos surrounding the film’s false starts, it was rumored at one point that Channing Tatum was considering leaving the project altogether. Although updates on the Gambit film have been few and far between, producer Lauren Shuler Donner noted that Channing Tatum is still attached to the film according to Jarett Wieselman of Buzzfeed.

Channing Tatum is still attached to play Gambit in a standalone #XMen movie, Lauren Shuler Donner told press in the scrum #TCA17

— Jarett Wieselman (@JarettSays) January 12, 2017

So far “Gambit” has lost two directors as Rupert Wyatt first agreed to direct the film and then later announced that he had stepped down from his duties as director. Following Rupert Wyatt’s departure, “The Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman signed on to direct the film, but he ended up exiting the project as well. Doug Liman has since signed on to direct DC’s “Justice League Dark.” So far FOX has yet to make any announcements regarding a new director.

Original plans called for “Gambit” to be released on October 7, 2016, but obviously that didn’t happen.

It was reported in the summer of 2015 that Lea Seydoux had agreed to play Belladonna in the film, but whether or not she’s still attached to the project is unclear at this time.

It seems that “Gambit” is still a passion project for Channing Tatum, but at the rate this film is going, Deadpool is going to have 8 films of his own before Gambit even gets one.

Now THR is reporting that Liman has left the film in what’s being described as a “mutual parting of ways.” The film was originally supposed to start shooting in 2015, then 2016 and then 2017. Due to the delays Liman started working on a project for Amazon Studios called “The Wall” which recently wrapped production.

Liman may have exited “Gambit” but he won’t be venturing too far from the comic book genre.

Variety is reporting that Doug Liman has signed on to direct DC’s “Justice League Dark.” Michael Gilio is set to write the script. Guillermo Del Toro and Scott Rudin are also attached to the project as producers.

Details on the film are slim at the moment, but the team will reportedly include John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon.

Simon Kinberg recently participated in a Television Critics Association Panel to talk about the new ABC series Designated Survivor and after the panel he spoke to /FILM about what’ going on with the X-Men film universe and more.

Earlier this year “Deadpool” was a smash hit and now fans are waiting to see what’s going to happen with another X-Men spinoff, “Gambit” which is set to star Channing Tatum. Things have been quiet on the “Gambit” front over the past few months and Kinberg said that the process is taking longer than expected because they’re trying to find the right tone for the film.

“I think the truth is when you have these movies that need a very special and unique tone, it takes a little while to find that tone. Deadpool feels like it exploded out of nowhere but it was a ten-year development process on that movie. I think it was honed over those ten years. I hope that Gambit doesn’t take ten years but it takes a little honing to get that tone and that voice exactly right. The character has such a specific voice in the comic in the same way that Deadpool has a specific voice in the comic, that we want to make sure that we capture that voice on the page. Really it’s just about getting a screenplay that is worthy of that character and I think we’re really close right now.”

“Gambit” is still expected to start filming sometime in the spring of 2017.

Simon Kinberg also commented on “Deadpool 2” which is set to hit theaters in 2018. “Deadpool” was a bit hit because it broke away from the conventional superhero movie schtick and it sounds like fans can expect more the same in the sequel.

“I think Deadpool 2 will comment on anything that’s happening in movies today especially in superhero movies.”

It’s been a rough road so far for Channing Tatum’ “Gambit” film but things continue to move along. Producer Simon Kinberg recently spoke to Collider about the film and said that it will be different from other films in the X-Men film universe.

“I mean Deadpool obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies,” says Kinberg. “The X-Menmovies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereasDeadpool is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.” Kingberg said.

Kinberg also noted in a recent interview with Collider that the film does have a director attached, but he can’t reveal who it is because the deal isn’t done yet. The film is set to start shooting in the spring and still currently has a release date of October 6, 2016.
