After months and months of hype and buildup, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” finally arrived in theaters last week, and the film was full of surprises. Throughout the movie fans learned more about Peter’s supporting cast, and also his relationship with Aunt May. Warning: big spoilers ahead.
Aunt May is played by Marisa Tomei, and like her previous counterparts, she’s worried about Peter’s wellbeing constantly due to his mysterious lifestyle. The dynamic between Peter Parker and Aunt May has been very similar in all of the Spider-Man films, but Marvel Studios decided to completely change the dynamic before the credits rolled.
At the very end of the movie Peter puts his Spider-Man suit back on in his room, and as he pulls the mask off Aunt May appears behind him and yells “what the f***” right as the movie ends.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and Goldstein noted that they wanted to take the emphasis off of Peter hiding his secret.
“It just sort of diminishes what is often the most trivial part of superhero worlds, which is finding your secret. It takes the emphasis off that, lets her become part of what’s really his life, so it’s not cloak-and-dagger stuff. It’s how does he best use these powers to help the world, help himself and his family and act responsibly. What’s funny is, when we first went in to Marvel, we said we were imagining that Aunt May would be a Marisa Tomei type, and they kind of exchanged a look, because they were already secretly in negotiations with her. So things worked out well; we were all on the same page.”
Daley also added that the dynamic sets up some potential storylines for future films.
“It sets up a fun storyline of having this maternal figure, who is supposed to protect this kid, but also knowing this kid is so much stronger than she is, and in fact his job is going to be to protect her, presumably.”
