Star Wars fans have a lot to be excited about right now. We’re only a few short months away from the release of “The Last Jedi” and after the Han Solo standalone film is released next year, fans will be looking ahead to “Episode IX” which is set to be released in 2019.
It seems that Disney and Lucasfilm will be releasing one Star Wars film every year until the end of time, and there’s one film in particular that fans have been asking for.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most popular Star Wars characters ever created, and fans have been hoping to see Ewan McGregor reprise the role in an Obi-Wan standalone film. Despite the demand, rumors of an Obi-Wan film have been downplayed over the past few years, but it looks like the project is finally moving forward.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the film is finally in development and Oscar nominated director Stephen Daldry is in talks to direct the film. According to the report, the project is in the early stages and does not have a script yet. If Daldry signs on he will also oversee development and writing with Lucasfilm.
Obi-Wan Kenobi isn’t the only character being considered for a standalone film, as the report also notes that Lucasfilm is considering putting Yoda and Boba Fett front and center for their own films.
Ewan McGregor has been asked many times if he’s interested in reprising the role and he’s made it clear that he’s on board.
“There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything. But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it,” McGregor said in an interview a few months ago. “It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes. I think they’ve got films to make until the 2020s, so I don’t think it’s going to happen soon if it happens at all.”
