“The Lord of the Rings” franchise was incredibly successful on the big screen, and it was recently reported that Amazon was trying to lock in a deal to launch a TV series based on the property on Amazon Prime.

Fans of the series were obviously excited when the news surfaced, and now the new series has been officially confirmed.

Amazon Studios announced that they’ve signed a multi-season commitment to create a TV that will also be produced by the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

It’s also worth noting that Amazon announced the deal includes the potential for spin-offs as well.

As of this writing no announcements have been made in regards to casting or when production will start.
