“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” is almost unanimously regarded as one of the worst comic book movies of all time, but Liev Schreiber received a lot of praise for his portrayal of Sabretooth in the film. Schreiber and Jackman had great chemistry worthy of the Sabretooth/Wolverine rivalry, and fans hoped to see them share a few scenes on the big screen once again someday.

Unfortunately Sabretooth didn’t appear in “Logan” and Hugh Jackman has retired from the role of Wolverine, so it’s unlikely that we’ll see Liev play the character again. But Schreiber recently spoke to Variety and he revealed that he was invited to return for the film, but his shooting schedule for “Ray Donovan” prevented it from happening.

“There was an invitation early on from Hugh [Jackman] and [director James Mangold] and I would have loved to work on it. It was very difficult given Ray Donovan’s schedule, and I think they went a different direction as well with story. I think it’s a terrific movie. I’m just very proud of Hugh and the way that he handled himself with that franchise and that character. It was a great experience to be involved with one of them and to get to work with them. I had mixed emotions when I heard that he was going to retire.”

It’s really too bad that they weren’t able to bring Schreiber back, as his Sabretooth would have been a welcome addition to the film. Luckily James Mangold and company were able to make a great film with what they had and everything worked out in the end.

“Logan” will return to theaters on May 16th with a special black and white edition.

In the near future, a weary Logan (Hugh Jackman) cares for an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart) at a remote outpost on the Mexican border. His plan to hide from the outside world gets upended when he meets a young mutant (Dafne Keen) who is very much like him. Logan must now protect the girl and battle the dark forces that want to capture her.
