Joss Whedon knocked it out of the park with “The Avengers,” but some fans were less than thrilled with “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The movie went on to make huge money at the box office to the tune of $1.4. million, but Joss Whedon admits that he wasn’t in a good place while he was making the movie.
Whedon spoke with Mark Ruffalo at Tribeca and he told the crowd that he was exhausted during filming and that he also conflicted with Marvel. It’s no big secret that Whedon and Marvel butted heads while filming, but Whedon says he blames himself for the public perception of his relationship with the company.
“I think that did a disservice to the movie and the studio and to myself,” Whedon said via Variety. “It was not the right way to be, because I am very proud of it. The things about it that are wrong frustrate me enormously, and I had probably more of those than I had on the other movies I made. But I also got to make, for the second time, an absurdly personal movie that talked about how I felt about humanity, and what it means, in very esoteric and bizarre ways, for hundreds of billions of dollars. The fact that Marvel gave me that opportunity is so bonkers, and so beautiful, and the fact that I come off of it feeling like a miserable failure, is also bonkers, but not in a cute way.”
Mark Ruffalo noted that he begged Joss Whedon to do another Marvel movie after “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and he told him that he said “I’ll never do it again.” It’s a shame that we won’t be seeing another Joss Whedon/Marvell collaboration, but he’s done more than enough already and the Avengers seem to be in good hands with the Russo Brothers.
