“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” was recently released and the film seems to be doing quite well at the box office. Like all Marvel films, this one contained a cameo from Stan Lee, but director James Gunn recently confessed that the cameo also contains a mistake. Spoilers ahead.
For years fans have been theorizing that the reason why Stan Lee appears in all of the Marvel films is because he’s actually a Watcher. The fan theory was confirmed in the film, but there’s a slight continuity error in Lee’s dialogue.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” was released in 2017, but the film is actually meant to take place in 2014, about six months after where the last film left off. That means “Captain America: Civil War” takes place after the film in the MCU timeline, and during a recent Facebook Q&A, director James Gunn admitted he screwed up.
“One thing I found very funny and interesting is the fact that people thought Stan Lee is a Watcher and that all of these cameos are part of him being a Watcher,” Gunn explained. “So, Stan Lee as, probably, a guy who is working for the Watchers was something that I thought was fun for the MCU. And yes, I know I made a mistake. I’ll own up to my mistake because Guardians of the Galaxy 2 theoretically happens in 2014, which is before Infinity War. And Stan Lee in the movie says, ‘That time I was the FedEx guy,’ which is what he is in Civil War. I screwed up; I wasn’t thinking, But I’m going to say that probably Stan Lee used the guise of a FedEx guy more than one time.”
It’s ok James, we forgive you. The movie was excellent regardless. If you haven’t seen it yet, go check it out when you get a chance.
