When “Arrow” kicked off season 4 the show used a flash-forward to let the fans know that someone important would be killed off before the season ended. After months and months of rumors, reports and speculation, the death finally happened during the most recent episode “Eleven Fifty-Nine.”

Obvious spoilers ahead!

Team Arrow was forced to say an emotional goodbye to their close friend Laurel Lance. It was Damien Darhk that killed Laurel Lance as he stabbed her in the torso with an arrow.

Malcolm Merlyn recovered the idol for Damien Darhk ,but Team Arrow still had possession of the revolving stone. Darhk was trying to break out of Iron Heights Prison when Team Arrow, with Andy Diggle by their side, broke into the prison to stop him. Damien Darhk armed several prisoners with shanks and one prisoner grabbed Andy and threatened to kill him if Team Arrow didn’t drop their weapons.

Team Arrow dropped their weapons and Andy revealed that he had been working with Darhk the whole time and that he had the revolving stone. He gave it to Darhk and Darhk put it back in the idol then regained his powers. He told Laurel that he made a promise to her father when he told him that he would kill her if Captain Lance betrayed him. When Oliver heard that he tried to shoot him with an arrow, but Damien Darhk used his powers to keep it suspended in the air. He then grabbed it and stabbed Laurel.

The Green Arrow took Laurel to the hospital, then left and came back as Oliver Queen. The doctors helped Laurel and she seemed like she was going to make a full recovery. She woke up and she shared an emotional moment with Oliver before he left the room for a brief second. He was standing in the hallway when she started convulsing and then the doctors announced that she had died at 11:59.

Katie Cassidy who plays Laurel Lance has been with the show from the beginning and many fans thought that she would be there until the end. Katie Cassidy’s comic book counterpart ends up marrying Oliver Queen, but unless they dip her in a Lazarus Pit it doesn’t look like that’s going to be happening in the show.

Although Katie Cassidy may be gone from “Arrow” she’s not gone from the Arrowverse entirely. “Arrow” executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed at a recent press screening that Katie Cassidy will be a guest star on an upcoming episode of “The Flash.” She will be playing Donna Nance a.k.a. Black Siren on Earth-2.

The episode will air on May 17 so fans will only have to say goodbye to Katie Cassidy for a little while. But when it comes to Laurel Lance that seems to be a different story because it looks like we just said goodbye to her forever.

Cassidy spoke to EW about her departure from the show and she said that it was sad, but she reached a point where she was ok with Laurel’s death.

“I love our crew. Being there for four and a half years, they’ve become family. It’s hard to not go into work every day and get to work with such amazing people. That part is certainly sad. Again, I was okay with it. We all came to an understanding that this was what was going to happen. I think the shock value is good. It’s such a jolt and such a turn in the story that it gives the [writers] so much more to do and places to go with it. Otherwise I feel like shows can get stale.” Cassidy said.

“Arrow” will return on April 27 and it looks like the next episode will show the funeral scene. You can check out the preview below.
