“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is definitely all the rage right now. The film has been breaking records since the day tickets went on sale and on Friday it crossed the $120.5 million mark to break the record for the biggest opening day of all time. But that’s nothing compared to the money the film brought in over the course of the weekend.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” set a new opening weekend record here in the U.S. with $238 million, beating out the $208.8 million set by “Jurassic World” earlier this year. The film is still trailing behind only slightly in the global market as it’s set to take in $517 million worldwide for the weekend. That number will make it the second highest grossing global opening weekend behind the $525 million “Jurassic World” brought in. However it should be noted that the film has yet to open in China as it is set to premiere there on January 9th.
The film is already considered a massive success as it has a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes and it’s receiving rave reviews from both critics and fans alike. The film also broke the record for biggest Thursday night opening, and the biggest December debut. It certainly isn’t all that far fetched to think that the movie will be breaking many more records in the weeks to come.
There’s no doubt that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is a huge hit and the pop culture dominance of Star Wars isn’t going to slow down anytime soon. With “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” set to premiere in December of 2016 and an untitled Episode VIII set to debut in May of 2017, it’s safe to say that the force is strong with this franchise.
