Deadline reports that a Joker standalone film focusing on the character’s origin is in development. “The Hangover” writer Todd Phillips and “8 Mile” writer Scott Silver have been tapped to write the film, with Phillips reportedly serving as director and according to the report, he’s also set to co-produce the film with Martin Scorsese.

The film is said to be the first film under a new banner which has yet to be named by Warner Bros. The intention is to make the film an origin story that isn’t part of any other iteration.

Jared Leto’s Joker is reportedly set to reprise his role in the upcoming “Suicide Squad” sequel and Harley Quinn spinoff, but the report notes that the Joker standalone film will launch a new version of the character with a new actor who will possibly be younger than Jared Leto.

The idea is for the movie to be a gritty crime film set in Gotham City in the 1980s that’s meant to feel less like a DC film, and more like a Scorsese film from that era such as “Taxi Driver” or “Raging Bull” for example.

No word on when the film could go into production, but Phillips and Silver are said to be writing the script.

The next DC film “Justice League” is set to open in theaters on November 17, 2017.
