The report has yet to be confirmed by Marvel or Sony, but “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn spoke out about the reaction to the news on Facebook, and he tried to put things into perspective for fans. He noted that he can’t confirm that the report is true, but he also seems to support the idea of Zendaya taking on the role.

“For me, if a character’s primary attribute – the thing that makes them iconic – is the color of their skin, or their hair color, frankly, that character is shallow and sucks. For me, what makes MJ MJ is her alpha female playfulness, and if the actress captures that, then she’ll work. And, for the record, I think Zendaya even matches what I think of as MJ’s primary physical characteristics – she’s a tall, thin model – much more so than actresses have in the past.”

James Gunn then talked about how keeping an open mind is perhaps the best approach fans can take moving forward.

“Whatever the case, if we’re going to continue to make movies based on the almost all white heroes and supporting characters from the comics of the last century, we’re going to have to get used to them being more reflective of our diverse present world. Perhaps we can be open to the idea that, although someone may not initially match how we personally conceive a character, we can be – and often are – happily surprised.”

We know that Tom Holland is returning as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, and we know that Michael Keaton is playing The Vulture, so that covers two of the biggest characters. But there are still a lot of questions to be answered in regards to which characters will be appearing in the film.

For months now fans have been trying to figure out who Zendaya is playing in the film and her character has been referred to as Michelle. However, it looks like the name Michelle was simply released to throw people off, because according to a new report Zendaya is playing one of Spider-Man’s most iconic love interests.

The Wrap is reporting that Zendaya is playing none other than Mary Jane Watson in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” At this time details are slim when it comes to this interpretation of Mary Jane and both Sony and Marvel declined to comment on the report.

Mary Jane Watson appeared in all three of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films and she was portrayed by Kirsten Dunst. Shailene Woodley was cast as Mary Jane for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” but fans never got to see her performance because her scenes were cut from the film.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.

As for Tom Holland he’s set to make his debut as Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War.” He will then move on to his own solo film which is set to be released on July 7, 2017. Jon Watts will directing the untitled film with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal working as producers.

The film will skip the origin story but will be set during Spider-Man’s high school years. This is why the cast is considerably younger than previous Spider-Man casts. Tom Holland himself is only 19 and Zendaya is the same age. Marisa Tomei will also be a part of the cast as she’s playing Aunt May this time around.

We’re all still waiting to find out which iconic Spider-Man villain will be stepping up to face Spidey in his first solo film with Tom Holland in the lead. On that note, we’re also waiting to see what Tom Holland’s Spider-Man costume looks like. Hopefully that’s coming sooner rather than later.
