The title is simply “The Last Of Us: Part II” and both Joel and Ellie will be returning for another adventure. As of right now the game is still in early development, but more details are set to be revealed in the coming months.

A reveal trailer has been released, and it shows a slightly more grown up Ellie playing guitar in a house of full of dead people. It certainly carries a tone befitting of “The Last Of Us” universe, and it will leave you with more questions than answers by the time it’s done, but that’s half the fun.

Many fans felt that “The Last Of Us” didn’t need a sequel, so it should be interesting to see where the story goes from here. Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog posted on the official Playstation blog, and noted that the team spent their time coming up with the right story.

“Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, that wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey.”

Sam Raimi recently spoke to IGN, and unfortunately he indicated that production on the movie likely won’t be moving forward anytime soon.

“Well, unfortunately that one — when we went to Neil with Ghost House Pictures we were hoping to get the rights like we do any project and then we’d take it out and sell it but we’d control the rights. With this one he went to Sony — who I have a very good relationship with — but they have their own plans for it and I think Neil’s plan for it — I’m not trying to be political — Neil’s plan for it is not the same as Sony’s. And because my company doesn’t have the rights, I actually can’t help him too much. Even though I’m one of the producers on it the way he set it up, he sold his rights to Sony, Sony hired me as a producer by chance, and I can’t get the rights free for him so I’m not in the driver’s seat and I can’t tell you what Sony and Neil together will decide on. If they do move forward I’d love to help them again.”

Raimi confirmed that he is still attached as a producer, but what that means, even he doesn’t know.

“Yes, I’m attached to it. I’m not too sure what that means. Right now it’s just sitting there. They don’t want to move forward, and it’s not my place to say why, and Neil, I think, is in a slight disagreement with them about how things should go so there’s a standstill. And I don’t have the power to move it.”

Since the announcement fans have been naming off actors and actresses who they would like to see play Joel and Ellie. Other fans rolled their eyes at the idea of a movie and said that the game is as close to a movie as it can get as is, and any adaptation probably wouldn’t be able to capture the spirit of the story.

Unfortunately for the fans it looks a sequel to the original game might be their best chance of seeing another Joel/Ellie adventure at this point.
