According to McFarlane the script is finished but it’s currently going through the editing process. McFarlane is trying to trim down the script to somewhere between 120 and 140 pages. He also mentioned that he’s trying to to work with a small budget as he hopes to direct the film himself.

“I want to keep it small, keep it tight, so they’ll let me direct it! I need to get him back up on the big screen again to make him relevant in a big way, which we will do,” McFarlane said.

However McFarlane did emphasize that the next Spawn film will not be a comic book film. He told ComicBook.com that the film would be more of a horror/suspense/supernatural movie and that Spawn would be lurking in the shadows.

“In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn. Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost.” McFarlane explained.

The movie doesn’t have a release date as of right now. But Todd McFarlane confirmed his goal is to start production on the film sometime this year.
