Spider-Man has had a rough go of it when it comes to his big screen career over the past few years. “Spider-Man 3” made a lot of money at the box office, but the film was panned by fans and critics alike. Then Sony launched “The Amazing Spider-Man” franchise which fizzled out after just two movies. Now Spider-Man is a member of the MCU, and his future looks bright, but unfortunately Marvel’s deal with Sony was made at the expense of Andrew Garfield.

Now that Spider-Man is back on a clear path to big screen success, Andrew Garfield has been opening up about his run in the red and blue suit. He recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and he revealed that he signed on to play Spider-Man in two films without reading a script, and he found out quickly that the studio was bringing a “corporate mind-set” to the project.

“I had to fight really, really hard to make sure that the character was honored and that we were offering something really fun, entertaining and also moving and complex and deep for all the young boys and girls that want to see their favorite superhero,” he says. “So many beautiful things came out of that. I met someone that remains incredibly important to my life on that — you can fill in the blanks on who that is.”

Andrew Garfield has been busy as of late promoting films such as “Hacksaw Ridge” and Martin Scorcsese’s “Silence” and he’s been pushing his acting skills to the limit. However, Garfield also confessed that he didn’t feel like his work was represented well by “The Amazing Spider-Man” films.

“But the difference between how I felt when Never Let Me Go and The Social Network were coming out and how I felt with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was that I didn’t feel represented. I was feeling very represented by those other two films, and with The Amazing Spider-Man stuff I didn’t feel like that was my work up there, in a weird way. It felt like a semblance of it or kind of a shade of it, but ultimately I felt it was enshrouded in that filter.”

You can catch Andrew Garfield in “Silence” which is out now, and you can catch Spider-Man on the big screen in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” which is set to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.

Spider-Man is now a part of the MCU, and his first MCU standalone film “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is set to be released in 2017. Fans are thrilled that Spidey now exists in a world that he can share with characters such as Iron Man and Captain America, but unfortunately for Andrew Garfield Spider-Man’s integration into the MCU came at the expense of his career as Spider-Man.

Despite the fact that Andrew Garfield was relieved of his friendly neighborhood Spider-Man duties, he’s been very supportive of Tom Holland taking over the role. The first official trailer for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” was recently released, and Garfield made it clear that he’s excited for the film.

“I watched it, it’s great. I think it looks great, I’m really excited to see it,” Garfield told ET. “I’m just a big fan of Tom and that character, so I just can’t wait to see it.”

You can check out the short clip below.

Andrew Garfield has had nothing but good things to say about Tom Holland, but unfortunately for him his run as Spider-Man didn’t exactly go as well as he had hoped. During a recent interview with Variety he noted that “The Amazing Spider-Man” films taught him that story and characters aren’t always at the “top of the priority list.”

“I signed up to serve the story, and to serve this incredible character that I’ve been dressing as since I was three, and then it gets compromised and it breaks your heart,” Garfield said. “I got heartbroken a little bit to a certain degree.”

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.
