Beware, massive spoilers for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” ahead. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” included some big moments for Spider-Man, and it almost included a moment that would have had a huge impact on Spidey’s MCU future going forward.
Near the end of the film, Peter Parker is invited to the Avengers facility in upstate New York where Tony Stark shows him a new suit, and makes him an offer to join the group. Tony tells Peter that he has 50 reporters behind a door, and he’s ready to announce Spider-Man as the newest Avenger.
The scene definitely tips its hat to Peter Parker’s big identity reveal in the “Civil War” comic book story arc, and during a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein shared that a possible identity reveal for Peter was on the table.
“That scene with the press behind the door, that started off as a more clear opportunity for Peter to say to the world, “I Peter Parker, am Spider-Man,’” Goldstein explained. “And he decides not to do it and walks away. It’s still that, but it had been set up that if he could just tell the world who he is, he would get all his problems solved and be loved by everyone.”
Ultimately the writers decided against it, and they decided to keep his identity a secret.
“What he realizes is that there is a virtue in being a secret identity and how he kind of has the advantage in many ways over his other superhero buddies,” Daley added.
Peter Parker’s secret is still safe for now, but it will be interesting to see if he will go public with his identity in a future Marvel film.
