Star Wars fans are going to have plenty of content to consume over the next few years, that’s for sure. It was recently announced that “The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson will be developing a trilogy based on new characters, and Disney confirmed today that “Game of Thrones” showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff will also be creating a new series of films.
Disney likes to do things big, and it’s now been confirmed that there are also multiple TV shows currently in development for their standalone streaming service according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct to consumer app. We’ve mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the interties that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn’t completely closed, we can’t be specific about that,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said during an earnings call Tuesday. “I think you’ll find the level of talent … on the television front will be rather significant as well.”
Iger also commented on the films that Weiss and Benioff will be creating, and he noted that their idea is focused on a certain point in time in the Star Wars mythology.
“Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars-based and we’ve actually been talking to them for a long time,” Iger said. “To my knowledge they didn’t express interest in creating a series. They have an idea for number of films and at some later date I’m sure we’ll disclose to all of you just what those are. They are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there.”
It’s interesting to that Iger pointed out that the films are based on a certain point in time from the mythology. Fans have long been asking for some sort of film or TV series based on the “Knights Of The Old Republic” and that concept sounds like something that would be a great fit for Weiss and Benioff.
