How It’s Decided Which Characters Will Appear On DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow

When it comes to shows in the “Arrowverse” fans can easily figure out what they’re going to get from the titles of the shows. “The Flash” is obviously about The Flash, and “Supergirl” is obviously about “Supergirl” and so on and so forth, but DC’s “Legends of Tomorrow” is the misfit of the group.

The show utilizes a team of DC characters who travel through time, and the series has a revolving door policy when it comes to which characters join the team.

That means the possibilities are wide open in regards to who could show up on the show, but during a recent panel at Ace Comic Con, producer Marc Guggenheim noted that even though they have a wish list, they don’t use certain characters unless the story is right.

“It’s a delicate balance.” Guggenheim revealed via Comicbook.com. “There’s always a wish list of characters, a bucket list of characters, but at the same time, we always try very hard to avoid the temptation to just wedge in characters. It really comes down to ‘What’s the story we’re telling this week?’ And if there’s an opportunity to tell that story with a character from the DC universe, or just a nod, or an Easter egg, we try to take the opportunity.”

Guggenheim went on to use John Constantine as an example of a character they’ve wanted to use for a while, but the writers patiently waited for the right opportunity.

“One thing we wanted to do on Legends was bring on John Constantine, as an example.” Guggenheim added. “But it wasn’t just a matter of ‘Well, let’s get Matt Ryan and we’ll just do it.’ You have to have the right story. Because if you don’t have the right story, it’s gonna feel flat, it’s gonna feel like you’re just paying a bill or checking a box.”

With Mollus growing more and more powerful, Stein passing away and Jax leaving the team, it looks like right now is the perfect time to bring in some new characters. We’ll just have to wait and see who appears when the show returns in February.
