“The Lord of the Rings” novels are beloved stories, and the film trilogy is still fresh in the minds of fans who enjoyed watching the wars of Middle-earth come to life on the big screen. Now it looks like “The Lord of the Rings” could be coming to the small screen, because Variety is reporting that Amazon is in talks to possibly develop a television series based on the property.
The report notes that as of right now no deal has been made, but Amazon is negotiating with Warner Bros. and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is said to be personally involved in the negotiations.
Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate have reportedly been shopping a potential series around and Amazon is currently the frontrunner to develop the show.
Amazon is said to be making a shift with their original programming as Amazon Studios aims to focus on more large-scale genre programming with international appeal. It’s safe to say “Lord of the Rings” fits that description.
The “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the following trilogy based on “The Hobbit” have made the franchise one of the highest grossing franchises in history.
Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate had been in a lawsuit since 2012 which was settled in July of this year, so the fact that the two sides are working together again shows signs of improvement in their working relationship.
