“The Flash” recently returned for season 4, and in the months leading up to the premiere the showrunners promised fans that the new season would be bringing the lighter tone back. They’ve delivered on that promise, as the new season has been full of humor, and fans of the series have been comparing it to season 1.
So far the episodes have mostly focused on villain of the week style stories, but it’s all part of a bigger picture.
The Thinker has a grand plan that involves all of the metas who were created when Barry escaped the Speed Force, and after hearing DeVoe’s name a few times, Barry is starting to realize he needs to get ahead of DeVoe before he ends up with another Savitar situation.
Collider recently visited “The Flash” set, and Grant Gustin said that Barry will become obsessed with The Thinker, and he teased that the show will take a dark turn in the weeks to come.
“Barry’s starting to get obsessed that this is our guy, he realizes that it’s going to get dirty quick, and before it gets dirty he wants to get ahead of this guy. And then they start to realize what a challenging foe he’s going to be and different than any other speedsters we’ve faced in the past. He’s not a speedster, he’s something we’ve never seen before. Things are going to take a dark turn quickly in the middle of the year.”
Even though things could be getting dark, it seems unlikely that the show will be walking the same path as season 3.
The cast and crew have expressed that they’ve really enjoyed the return of the lighter tone, so it’s safe to say that the “dark turn” probably won’t change the vibe of the show overall.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
“The Flash” airs Tuesdays on the CW.
